Alongside Noel Gallagher and Beck's contributions over their signature rock sound the Black Keys navigated between their established musical direction in their twelfth album 'Ohio Players'. This album delivers excellent tracks including 'Paper Crown' together with 'On the Game' but many songs throughout the record capture familiar themes instead of disruptive experimentation. From Akron roots emerge but the album demonstrates an opportunity to go deeper probably because it chose impact over depth. The impressive array of guest collaborators in this record solidifies the band's established sound while avoiding any meaningful exploration of fresh musical domains. The solid selection demonstrates why Sparkle Horses stands as one of their best works but the creative charge behind their authentic sound seems to disappear.
