Through 'The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)' Eminem traces nostalgia but he seems grounded in the nostalgic sound of his older work. The song's hookable beats create enthusiastic reactions but some of the poetic lines remain flat by repeating outdated subject matter that currently seems irrelevant. He fights between preserving his bouncer attitude from the past while converging that energy with an updated social context. I had to battle between laughing at Eminem’s witty lyrics while also being frustrated by lines that failed to feel meaningful at this point in time. We become aware of his musical ability whenever he discusses his daughter. I wanted an update that would allow me to connect with the material.
